How to Disable Tracking on Windows 10

Windows 10 comes with several built-in tracking features that collect data to enhance user experience, provide personalized content, and improve services. However, many users value their privacy and prefer to limit or disable these tracking features. If you’re one of them, here’s how to regain control of your privacy on Windows 10. At OSVPN Solution, we’re committed to helping you stay secure and private online.

1. Adjust Privacy Settings

Windows 10 allows you to control data collection via its Privacy settings. Follow these steps:

  • Open Settings and go to Privacy.
  • Review each category under Privacy, such as “General,” “Location,” and “Camera.”
  • Toggle off unnecessary permissions for apps.

2. Turn Off Ad Personalization

Windows uses your data to show personalized ads. To disable this:

  • Go to Settings > Privacy > General.
  • Toggle off Let apps use advertising ID to make ads more interesting to you.

3. Disable Activity History

Activity History tracks the apps and files you’ve used. To turn it off:

  • Navigate to Settings > Privacy > Activity History.
  • Uncheck Store my activity history on this device and Send my activity history to Microsoft.

4. Stop Diagnostic Data Collection

Windows 10 collects diagnostic data to improve its services. To limit or disable this:

  • Open Settings > Privacy > Diagnostics & feedback.
  • Set the diagnostic data option to Required diagnostic data or toggle it off if possible.

5. Disable Location Tracking

If you don’t use location-based services, turn off location tracking:

  • Go to Settings > Privacy > Location.
  • Toggle off Location for this device.

6. Turn Off Cortana

Cortana, the virtual assistant, collects data to personalize your experience. To disable Cortana:

  • Open Settings > Cortana.
  • Toggle off Cortana-related permissions, or disable Cortana completely.

7. Manage Permissions for Apps

Many apps request access to your microphone, camera, and other features. To manage these permissions:

  • Go to Settings > Privacy.
  • Under “App permissions,” review each section and disable access for unnecessary apps.

8. Use a Privacy Tool

Several third-party tools, such as O&O ShutUp10 and W10Privacy, help simplify the process of disabling Windows tracking features. Use these tools cautiously and only download them from trusted sources.

9. Disable Telemetry via Group Policy Editor (Pro Users)

For Windows 10 Pro users, you can disable telemetry using the Group Policy Editor:

  • Press Win + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
  • Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data Collection and Preview Builds.
  • Double-click Allow Telemetry and set it to Disabled.

10. Regularly Review Privacy Settings

Microsoft updates Windows 10 frequently, which can reset or introduce new tracking features. Regularly check your privacy settings to ensure they remain configured to your preferences.

By following these steps, you can disable tracking features on Windows 10 and enhance your privacy. For a more secure online experience, explore OSVPN Solution’s services to protect your data and browsing activity.
